Epic Games doesn’t offer universal cloud saves the way Steam does. Some games sync automatically via your Epic account. Most don’t. If you reinstall Windows or move to a new PC without backing up first, your progress is gone.
Here’s how to find and copy your Epic Games saves before anything goes wrong.
Does Your Game Use Epic Cloud Saves?
Check the Epic Games Launcher first:
- Open the Epic Games Launcher
- Go to your Library
- Look for a cloud icon next to the game
If you see it, saves for that game are synced to your Epic account and will restore when you reinstall and sign back in. Fortnite and other live-service titles work this way.
If there’s no cloud icon, your saves are local-only. Continue below.
Where Epic Games Saves Are Stored on PC
There’s no single folder — it depends on the game. Check these paths in order:
Most common:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\[GameName]\Saved\SaveGames\
Press Win + R, type %LOCALAPPDATA%, press Enter. Then navigate to the game’s folder and look for Saved\SaveGames.
Also check:
Documents\My Games\[GameName]\%APPDATA%\[GameName]\%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\[GameName]\
For Unreal Engine games specifically (most Epic-published titles use UE):
%LOCALAPPDATA%\[GameName]\Saved\SaveGames\is almost always correct
How to Back Up Your Epic Saves
- Press
Win + R, type%LOCALAPPDATA%, press Enter - Find the folder matching your game’s name
- Navigate to
Saved\SaveGames\inside it - Copy the entire
SaveGamesfolder to an external drive or cloud storage - Label it clearly:
[GameName]-saves-backup-[date]
Copy the entire folder, not individual files. Unreal Engine games write multiple save slots and config files that need to travel together.
What If You Can’t Find the Folder?
- Launch the game, make a new save, then quit
- Press
Win + R, type%LOCALAPPDATA%, press Enter - Sort by Date Modified — the game’s folder will be near the top
- Check one level deeper for a
SavedorSaveGamessubfolder
This finds saves for 95% of Epic titles.
Restoring After Reinstall
- Reinstall the game through Epic
- Launch it once to create the directory structure
- Quit immediately
- Navigate to the same
SaveGamespath - Replace the new (empty) folder with your backup
- Relaunch — your saves should load
